 bad news and some tips on operation if yours works September 2, 2010

Got this item and was very excited. After carefully following the directions (which are poorly-written), I was able to sometimes seal bags, but the vacuum was far less than satisfactory.
The sealing operation seemed to work fine the first evening I tried this sealer the next day when I was double checking my methodology, I was not able to get the unit to seal properly. I tried multiple times. No seal, no vacuum.
The night before, I did get a good seal, but the vacuum did not work well. I have several other Deni products and I love them. This is the reason I bought this vacuum sealer above other brands.
If you are willing to give one of these vacuum sealers a shot, there is a hinged vacuum "valve" that lifts up. It is located in the base of the unit (a thin gray bar with beveled ends). One side of the bag goes below it and one side above it. There are dashed lines marked where the bag edge should go. Once that is in place, press firmly on the lid and it locks down. I had trouble doing this on the countertop, but when I placed the sealer on the floor, I could lock the lid just fine. You may have to press hard. The vacuum process begins. Once vacuumed, you are supposed to press down on a gray bar on the lid. This operation seems touchy and does not always work. If you succeed in pressing the gray bar, the sealer light comes on and heat sealing begins. When the light goes off, your seal is complete. Buttons on either side of the unit release the lid when pressed. Only trouble is that I never achieved the combination of a good seal and good vacuum.
I am confident that had the sealer worked properly, I could have done it. Well, I never sealed and vacuumed a bag in six or more attempts. I had two different people try and help me. No one succeeded. Good luck. This unit got good reviews, but I cannot say it ever worked for me.
BTW - everything Amazon did was super great!

Product AMAZON sent, though in a sealed box, was marked "Damaged" in magic marker all over the box (in black and red ink). Needless to say, the product DID NOT WORK and was sent back for a refund.

I've tried multiple times to vacuum seal meat but the suction fails to evacuate all of the air from the bag. Won't protect meat from freezer burn. maybe I have a defective unit.

Bought this for my wife, she is very hard on appliances, read prior review, and ordered it. Works great, cutter so so. But she is happy, and that makes me happy.
