It's great except for the hand burns July 29, 2010 T. Callahan I really like a lot about this toaster oven. It doesn't heat up the kitchen like my old one did and it even makes decent toast. It bakes well. It looks a little boxy but it's not horribly ugly.
Some people have complained about the oven not turning off when the timer goes off but I see this as a positive. I prefer to check the food and turn it off when I decide to. After all, the regular oven doesn't turn off when the timer goes off, does it? No, you have to turn this toaster oven off just like the regular oven and that's just fine.
But I am getting tired of burning my hand. I really try to be careful when opening the door but at least once every 10 days or so my hand touches the metal part on the top of the door. This is really a design flaw that should be fixed and why I can't give it 5 starts.
The best toaster oven! July 26, 2010 Carla Douglas (Denver, IA) Over the years I have had three toaster ovens. By far, this one is the best.
The instructions say to put 1/4 cup water in the broiler pan when broiling, to help with splatter, and it works. I have used the broiler and baked in the oven, I haven't used the toast feature. The size is just right, the controls are touch, which I really like, the black and stainless finish looks very nice, and the rack and broiler pan are very heavy duty. The only way it could be better, if it was a "cool to the touch" oven.
Worth Every Penny July 22, 2010 B. Safdie I bought this to replace a very highly-rated DeLonghi toaster oven I bought many years ago. While the DeLonghi was good, I mainly used it for toast and very limited cooking.
This Cuisinart is an entirely different beast. I love it! When you buy a Cuisinart Food Processor, you know you are getting quality. When you buy anything else with the Cuisinart logo, you can never be sure. This toaster oven is the only other Cuisinart product I have ever seen that is in the same class as their food processors. It does what it was designed to do, and it does it well.
Construction:
This thing feels STURDY! One nit, I wish the crumb tray was accessible from the front and not the back.
Electronic Controls:
If you have never had a toaster oven with electronic controls, you don't know what you are missing. Dials and slides are so imprecise and so _last century_! ;-) You can get started easily because most functions are pretty intuitive. However, this toaster oven does so much, you will want to read the manual to get the most out of your purchase.
Toast:
It does the job. How excited can you get about toast? Well, the designers at Cuisinart succeeded in giving me a "Gee Whiz" moment with, you guessed it, toast. Frozen Bread or Bagel? Hit defrost as an option to your darkness setting and the oven warms to defrost the bread before going into the toast cycle. At the same setting, 4 to 6 slices toast differently than 1 to 2 slices -- there's a button for that too. If you are a toast or bagel fan, this oven is your dream.
Oven:
The oven can Bake, Broil, and has a Convection option. The single rack adjusts between two sets of rails and you can get intermediate positions by turning the rack over in the same slot. I love this thing. I hardly use my microwave at all anymore. I warm food with the convection setting at 300 or 350 degrees. It takes 15 to 20 minutes usually, but the quality of the result is just excellent. With the Pizza Bake button, I can do a whole 10-inch personal pizza in just a few minutes. I have cooked steaks, chops, and chicken. I have roasted vegetables. Try roasting some whole portabello mushrooms on convection a few minutes, then finish them on your charcoal grill. Rockin'! I never used a toaster oven for real cooking before!
This is the first toaster oven that I have ever owned that I consider to be a first class member of my cooking repertoire.
I highly recommend it.
Why only four stars?
Really, this is a 5-star product, but as noted by others, there is an annoying flaw. The metal lip on the door does get hot. As I write this, I am sporting a small burn on my left hand. This seems to be the mark of ownership because others have claimed similar burns. You should know about this problem before you buy. Knowing this, would I buy this oven all over again? Heck yeah! I'll get into the habit of using a oven mitt. This oven is worth it.
Can I get one that works, please?! July 20, 2010 Melissa B (Lakewood, Colorado, USA!) I bought one of these from Amazon.com and foolishly threw away the box before using the oven, so I couldn't return it to Amazon.com ( It was Cuisinart, right? And it gets all these good reviews here at the Amazon.com site! )
Then I try the oven with a simple task of making some chicken nuggets. They came out cold! Why? Well the oven was set to 375 degrees, but it beeped to say it was up to temperature, but the real temperature in there was only 150 at the time! I verified this with an oven thermometer. But it was a meat thermometer so I bought another more precise oven temperature thermometer from ( yes ) Amazon.com and verified this. Then the oven took another 10-15 minutes after that feat, to actually reach stable temperature ( where it regulates ) , BUT it was 50 degrees below what I had it set for! So I had to find a box to pack it in and get a return authorization from Cuisinart and send it back. Fortunately I saved my old toaster over, which wasn't working so well anymore, but at least still worked. Oh, and this oven's serial number wasn't showing up in their database. What is THAT?
They got the over returned and then shipped me out a new one. So I get the new one and figure, well it's gotta work this time, right? So I toss the box out in the trash that night.
WRONG. This one does exactly the same thing! It tells me it's up to the set temperature after about 2 minutes but is really under 200 degrees when I set it to 400. Then I gotta wait for it to stabilize to regulating temperature, and that final temp is 25-50 degrees below what the oven thermometer says!
So I wanted to be fair and went and bough another oven thermometer to verify this ( from Amazon.com ) and this time made sure it says it's a super accurate one and all that. Same thing.
So now I have to get a shipping box and ship this second one back again. At least this time Cuisinart has offered to pay shipping, BUT I tossed my old toaster oven out this last time, thinking the second Cuisinart one HAD to work, right? So now I'll be without one.
Cuisinart is also looking into whether this could have anything to do with the altitude ( we're in Denver ) but who knows?
I'm so sick of this and would not recommend this to ANYONE now!
DO NOT BUY THIS OVEN!
You get what you pay for July 13, 2010 Ray (Chicago Suburbs) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered this toaster oven after my $50 GE broke after about 2 years. I wanted a high quality toaster oven that will last and do it's job. I have had the Cuisinart for about 3 weeks now and am, for the most part, very pleased. The packaging was very extensive and protective. The manual is helpful and easy to understand, although slightly more extensive than I had expected. I didn't intend on spending 20-30 minutes reading a toaster oven manual, but that's not a big deal. I don't typically use the oven for extensive cooking, such as roasts, chickens, etc. More so for toast, bagels, biscuits, frozen pizza and reheating left overs. For those things, this product works well. I have only cooked one pizza, but it came out perfect and cooked in about 8 minutes (thin crust).
The downfalls, which for the most part I was aware of prior to purchasing the procut (thanks to great Amazon reviews) are: 1) The crumb tray has to be emptied from the back. 2) It's rather dark inside the oven since it's deep, which makes it tough to see while cooking. I find myself opening the oven and sliding the tray halfway out to see how much longer I should leave the food in. A light inside would be nice. I'm not sure if that's offered on higher end models. 3) A backlight on the display would be nice.
Not really a downfall, but since there are a lot of settings/options, you will need to experiment to find out what works for the tyep of food you are cooking and your liking. During this learning process I often find myself under-toasting/cooking which means the oven will turn off and I have to reset it and turn it back on. As time passes, this has become more of a null issue.
Overall I am pleased with the product. It feels and looks solid, cooks well, doesn't take up too much space and looks nice on my counter. We will see if it stands the test of time. I would give it 4.5 stars if that was an option.
